budnik grand national wheels A Trip Down Market Street 2015 (on my longboard)

When I came across the A Trip Down Market Street 1906 film, I
read a comment from a viewer that suggested someone should
do a contemporary version. Rather than filming from inside a
vehicle and getting stuck behind a city bus, I thought I'd try filming the street while riding my longboard at the same time.

Here the viewer gets a longboarder's p.o.v. as I travel slightly faster than the cable car in the 1906 film, squeezing in between some tight spaces and switching between the steet and sidewalk.

I started at city hall (by 8th Ave) and rode down to the ferry bldg. It took me four attempts to get this right. The first two runs were just practice runs to test the speed, the terrain and to feel how it is to maneuver around cars and buses. This was my first time to longboard in a large scale urban setting. The third run went great, but I caught on video a homeless guy taking a dump at the curb so I omitted this version. I went back again
and shot another run.

Filmed with a Gopro mounted to a selfie stick which I held as I skated. In post I included snippets from the 1906 film for
comparison.

In the 1906 film we see the street as a sort of chaotic free-for-all. Although there are no more cable cars, today there are still street cars and the street is a lot safer for all the different modes of transportation, more coordinated and smooth flowing with the help of traffic lights and markings on the pavement.

Note the clothing that people wore in that era. The colors were dark, black, formal and homogenous. Everyone wore hats. One interesting thing I noticed was that as I was longboarding and holding the gopro, a few people looked at me with a little curiosity, just like in the 1906 film where pedestrians looked curiously at the camera operator.
